  • Your Koi Pond – 5 Great Design Ideas

    Koi Pond Design

What a great idea. A pond in the backyard with fauna and viewing areas built in. It’s a great way to turn your land into a rewarding peaceful place to get some personal time and think. Just like any task, it comes down to materials, land, future goals and ability to do maintenance on your property.

Great Design Ideas Require Great Work

At the end of the day you are either going to be able to handle some, all or none of the work for yourself. You make decisions of design based on a few things: your desires, your budget, your physical constraints. You must be willing to pay for things you really cannot do and NOT GET STUCK.

View our Koi Pond Kits and Product Information

Check out these great ideas for designing and building your koi pond (doesn’t have to be koi specifically, but it’s a good example)

    Koi Pond Basic – Specifications

    pond-schema
A koi pond must be properly designed in order to allow whatever species you have living in your pond to thrive. In this case Koi Fish are the topic. Here are some basic guidelines for creating the necessary environment.

    • 3+ feet deep
    • 25 sq. ft. of pond per koi
    • No less than 1,000 gallons of water

Koi fish need shade. If you’re pond is in the direct sunlight you need to grow some kind of water plants that provide reasonable shade throughout 15%-30% of the pond surface area. Regardless, you need some sort of plant life to provide food and a healthy ecosystem for your pond.

Good filtration is a necessity to handle organic waste produced by the system that cannot be consumed by the environment. Spray Koi Pond Coatings instead of rolls of liner are very beneficial because you can install a bottom drain easily in this scenario.

Aeration is necessary to provide appropriate oxygen levels to the pond for your koi and other animals in the system. If you live in a hot climate or have large fish, proper aeration is crucial and can be accomplished with jets, waterfalls, and shallow streams.

Water quality is the last component that cannot be overlooked in the design phase of your koi pond. Optimal ph and water temperature are the two main factors determining water quality. A temp between 39 F and 68 F is ideal along with a ph balance between 7.0 and 7.8

    Koi Pond Design – Visualizing

This is where your yard becomes a canvas. Many people may decide to bring in a landscape architect to help perfect the physical presentation of the koi pond and the surrounding plants and ground. With a spray coating for a koi pond the ideas are limitless. You don’t need to line the pond with heavy rocks or debris to try and hold down a plastic liner or protect the edge of the liner. You are also able to design absolutely any shape you want unlike traditional ponds where you are limited to round, oblong, or kidney shaped. This is a big plus, especially in small areas where you may want small veins throughout the area or have bottom structure that makes for an odd shaped floor.
If you do not have the dimensional thinking and understanding of plants that co-exist well, than a consultant might be right for you.
If you do have the ability, you might want to take a look at some of these resources for layout ideas:
Backyard Design | Koi Pond Shapes

Do NOT USE SMALL ROCKS in your Pond

    algae-rock
This is a big no no. The maintenance is a nightmare. If you decide to do this, you will have to clean out the pond rock every year and clean thoroughly. If you don’t, small pockets of hydrogen will form under and between the rocks. If one of this pockets bursts, you will have a koi grave instead of a koi pond.

    Move your water!

If you want to keep proper oxygen levels and keep algae from forming in uncontrollable levels, get a waterfall or a river. Waterfalls are an awesome addition to a koi pond because they really add depth to the area you are working with. They make a little area look much bigger. They create plenty of oxygen for your environment. Lighting up a waterfall at night is ridiculous! You will probably enjoy that addition for decades to follow

    Spray Coat Your Koi Pond

Spray polyurea and polyurea hybrids are becoming very available and with significant advantages over concrete and traditional pond liners.

    • Concrete is very expensive in regards to labor and time to complete.
    • Traditional liners are cheaper, but they come at a price. These systems typically only last a few years which ends up costing you double the time and effort to just do a spray koi pond kit. In fact the original installation is easier because you do not have to mess around with bulky liners and seams. Instead you simply spray the area to the proper build, let it cure and … well, that’s it. This is also a LOT easier than trying to use concrete. There is no way you are going to do concrete DIY unless you are a mason by trade.

  • What is MDI – Is it Safe?

    What is MDI?

MDI is the acronym representing methyl diphenyl diisocyantate. There are three main versions of this compound:

    • 2,2′-MDI
    • 2,4′-MDI
    • 4,4′-MDI

The 4,4′ isomer is most widely used.

    Who makes MDI

Bayer followed closely by Yantai Wanhua. Other major producers are BASF, BorsodChem, Dow, Huntsman and Nippon Polyurethane Industry. All major producers of MDI are members of the International Isocyanate Institute. Their main purpose is the promotion of the safe handling of MDI and TDI in the workplace, community and environment. This implies that there is an inherent risk or danger involved with the use of this chemical.

    How Dangerous is MDI?

MDI is an allergen and sensitizer, meaning that once certain amount of exposure occurs, the person is more susceptible to reaction at much lower concentrations. Persons developing sensitivity to isocyanates may have dangerous systemic reactions to extremely small exposures, including respiratory failure. Handling MDI requires strict engineering controls and personal protective equipment. With this knowledge it must be understood, that even though the resulting chemical reaction of polyols and MDI is a safe rugged durable polyurethane or polyurea coating, the process of applying this material is where the danger lies.

Marketing information for spray bedliner materials and other coatings tends to bypass this important fact. Yes, it’s stated in the msds sheets, or in fine print. However, generally sales people leave out the very important fact that any exposure to mist from the process of spraying a bedliner can result in allergic and sensitized reaction to the components. This is DANGEROUS and should be taken very seriously.

    MDI Exposure from Bedliners

We would like to hear from anyone who has had physical negative side effects resulting from the exposure to spray on bedliners or other coatings involving polyurea or polyurea hybrids.

    Why Do We Care?

We are manufacturers of high quality polyurethanes and polyhybrids that do not use MDI for reactions. We continue to research polyureas and polyurethane vendors. In that research, we find some covering up the facts about MDI in their products, or at least the danger associated with them.

  • Competing DIY Spray Guns: Low Quality

DIY Products come with Low Quality Spray Guns

Rollers identify low quality product from the start- they equate to a 1 part (1 part vs 2 parts or plural component) there is no texture control so those products have little beads or ?pebbles? to create some slip-proofing? Faulty coatings yield low end results. The main indicator is that the ?orange peel? or texture wears out quickly. This is why:

    • They?re made of a different solid material than the coating which dries ?around? each grain but with no actual ?bond? to the grains,
    • These grains are made of either crumb rubber (old tires) or ground acrylic paint which bears no stress, they fall out,
    • They?re not made of polyurea or polyhybrid which have very high tensile strengths over 2,000 psi
    • The shutz , pronounced ?shoots gun? is the cheapest undercoating gun on earth. Many don?t come with containers to hold the coating!

    close-upShutzshutz-asembledshutz-with-can

Shutz guns were made for 1-part under coating which is a cheap tar-like formula to spray under vehicle frames & bodies & not to apply a bedliner which is inherently less viscous (thinner) than tar? since undercoating guns were never designed for true spray on bedliner, and mostly because true spray-lining formulas require good equipment to apply, every DIY spray on bedliner sold except SLC equate to imitations and poor spray guns.

    Al?s Liner Professional Gun

? Al?s Liner comes with no gun, BUT you can buy theirs for fifty-five dollars. The real problem with that is that it?s a cheap gun available at harbor freight for $14. Als liner DIY bedliner kit comes with 1 gallon + 4 ounces primer + 4 ounces color = 134 ounces = barely over a gallon of spray bedliner. This is NOT enough to line a truck bed properly. PERIOD. Al?s Liner States ?A professional grade bed liner spray gun that delivers a perfect finish to your and can be used over and over again. It?s an all-purpose air texture. SLC uses Graco, Binks, DeVilBiss equipment. You might verify at the AlsLiner site or inspect truths at http://www.spray-lining.com/diy/compare-diy-bedliners.php .

  • Killing Yourself Slowly

The polyurea and polyurethane coating industries have become increasingly important as the functional applications have increased. The following uses have been identified and highly employ protective coatings:

    – Theme parks
    – Playground
    – Boats
    – truck bed liners
    – agricultural equipment
    – military
    – bridges
    – industrial

Side Effects of a Superior Product

Lung infections, sore eyes and skin rashes, neurological damage, kidney and liver damage along with others are all symptoms of exposure to polyurea and/or polyurethane either by vapor or direct contact. Dangerous chemicals are applied frequently in many industries and environments. The key is that after they cure or are applied, there is a reasonable threshold they attain that makes them safe. Like after painting, you notice the ?paint smell? subsides after 3-4 days and all is good. Well, it?s not really like that, but that is a simple comparison.

    What is Safe?

Safe simply means that there are no immediate or long term side effects to touching or being near a material for some period of time at some concentration in some environment. One of the most obvious examples of NOT safe is the bi-product of Nuclear Power Plants. These materials are so hazardous that they are stored underground in water tight containers FOREVER. Yet, we still produce them on a daily basis in the name of ?clean energy?. So, some group of lawmakers determined that the risk is worth the reward.

    Is this worth the RISK

Radioactive Waste in Washington causes ground water hazard potential. The Governor Inslee stated that there was no current health risk because it would take some time for the leaks to breach ground water or the Columbia River. WHAT??!!

Why are household chemicals considered safe?

They contain cancer causing or otherwise dangerous (to the respiratory, skin or other organs) chemicals that evaporate into the air you breathe or are absorbed through the skin when in direct contact. Still, people use Xylene, Lacquer Thinner, gasoline, bleach, Chlorine and other dangerous chemicals daily in an effort to clean, prepare, construct and operate their lives.
You see the warnings on the labels and hopefully you follow the safety precautions as directed. Unfortunately, sometimes people hold an idea of ?if I cannot see it, it cannot hurt me?. This is a deadly mentality to carry when working with chemicals in general.
Bleach for instance has horrible side effects if used without gloves and face mask or used in a closed environment. Yet, we use it every day on our countertops, toilets and walls. The long term side effects are not discussed much because the industry would rather assume that consumers are following all safety practices.

    Handling is Key

Millions of articles, books, directions, guides address the issue of safely handling materials. MSDS sheets exist to provide necessary handling procedures and exposure prevention information. OSHA exists to provide safety regulations to the US workforce. Small business owners really need to place importance on materials handling, application and preventative measures for exposure. They are typically less regulated and may have better odds for cutting corners because there is less accountability.
Applying Polyurea or Polyurethane like a dumbass
Simply put, if you are spraying a polyurea or polyurethane material and not wearing proper respirator and protective clothing you are walking a tight rope. Similarly, if you are spraying it outside with no booth than you are exposing others to a very dangerous situation. If you are spraying it inside with no protection you are asking for it.
    Source(http://www.rainforestinfo.org.au/good_wood/housepnt.htm)
?Polyurethanes are made from isocyanates, the chemicals associated with the world’s worst chemical accident in India in 1984 (the Bhopal disaster, which involved the accidental release into the atmosphere of methyl isocyanate from a Union Carbide factory). They cause lung irritation or lung damage and are sensitising chemicals, meaning that after sufficient exposure, one can become highly sensitive in an allergic way, reacting to even very small doses of the chemicals (5, 10). They may be released as monomers from both water-based and organic solvent-based polyurethane varnishes. The combination of volatile aromatics and the release of isocyanates make polyurethanes one of the most hazardous interior-use products on the market. ?

Safe Polys that are Comparable to Dangerous Ones

There are safe poly hybrids that have the same physical characteristics of polyureas and polyurethanes but don?t have the same negative side-effects seen with the Rhino Lining, Line-X, Ultimate Linings, Qwikliner and other coatings companies.

    Blowing Your Mind

In an interview with a polyurethane applicator we were told that the representative of one of the above companies specifically stated that they were told, ?There is no problem spraying our polyurea. It is completely safe and environmentally friendly?.
Why on earth would a bed liner company risk the life of others to simply make a deal? Maybe a deal with the Devil!
Do your research if you are a body shop owner or repair business who also applies spray coatings like Rhino Lining, Line-X, Scorpion or Spray-Lining bedliner.

  • VOCs Versus Isocyanates

    What are VOCs

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at ordinary, room-temperature conditions. They have a low boiling point which yields a high vapor pressure. Because of this a large volume of molecules evaporate (sublimate) from the liquid or solid into the local air.

VOCs include both man-made and natural chemical compounds. VOCs are the primary cause for odor in chemicals. Not all VOCs are harmful to people. One must understand that because something has VOCs in it does NOT mean that it is dangerous to use in open air environments.

    VOC Regulation

The definition of VOCs is not straight forward as it is based on the laws and codes in the state it is being regulated. Anthropogenic VOCs are regulated by law, especially indoors, where concentrations are the highest. VOCs typically effect people slowly overtime which makes them hard to study. The United States Department of Labor and its Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulate VOC exposure in the workplace. Volatile organic compounds that are hazardous material would be regulated by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration while being transported.

    What are Isocyanates

Isocyanates are a class of compound that includes a functional group of elements -N=C=O. The logical difference between VOCs and isocyanates is the fact that VOCs are logical and include a vast array of molecules and compounds where Isocyanates are exact in form.

  • What is Polyurea

Two-part polyurea spray elastomers were brought to market in the 1990s after being invented by Bayer in Germany?the aspirin company. They are useful coatings for large surface area projects because of their fast reactivity and relative insensitivity to moisture. They can be applied at nearly any temperature, bonds easily to concrete and metal surfaces, cures to full strength in as little as a half an hour, is flexible enough to bridge small cracks and withstands high temperatures when cured. Some polyureas reach strengths of 6000psi (40MPa) tensile and over 500% elongation making it a tough coating. Due to rapid cure time, many coats can be built up quickly.

    Is Polyurea Really this Good

The biggest factor that determines how well a polyurea will bond and last is preparation of the substrate. Moisture vapor emmission rate and proper solids content are also important factors in developing a proper bond. When those conditions are met, you will experience a truly professional polyurea coating system.

    Polyurea Applications

The reported applications range from a new way to topcoat concrete floors to sealers for concrete countertops to impermeable coatings for concrete bridge beams as well as spray on linings such as bedliners (The history of Spray Bedliners) and floor coatings.
In the decorative concrete arena, the most intriguing potential applications are as a replacement for epoxy/polyurethane coatings for floors.

    Is a polyspartic a polyurea?

All polyureas are two-part systems, meaning that a resin has to be mixed with a catalyst to create the curing reaction that hardens the material. Polyurea has been used very successfully for corrosion-resistant coatings and repair materials, although application is awkward since it has an extremely short pot life?about 3 seconds, so the two parts must be mixed at the spray tip, requiring lots of maintenance on expensive high-pressure equipment.
