Does Spray-Lining have Anti-Stick Coatings?

Can I use your product to protect containers and what type of lining is recommended for this job?

Answer

– Thanks for your question Hector,

?Spray on Truck Bed Liner? is actually a Poly-Hybrid or Polyurea formula and in some case a polyurethane. The technology for spray bed liners came from the farm and military industries where slip-proofing and protective coatings were always a reality. Spray-Lining SLPVH product line is designed to be versatile, allowing the applicator to create protective coatings with a variety of characteristics from slip-proof to anti-stick. By using our “Part C” polymer powders in different ratios you can create high tensile strength anti-stick coatings for your specific application. You will use our recommended variation of poly to liquid (part A and B + R [flex] + C [powders]) plus a little bit of testing to get the perfect mix ratio for your application. Typical anti-stick coatings use a ratio of 2A : 1B flex + 1 part powder : 1 part liquid.

In any case, we do not display all of this exp simply because it is all in groups of unique issues that will definitely gloss over the average website visitor?s eyes. But that is the difference between us & Rhino or Line-X; they are a bed liner vendor & Spray-Lining, is part of Green Tech Solutions Team. We are a chemical manufacturer that specializes in coatings. I hope that answered you.

As you might have expected, Rhino Linings, Line-X and Scorpion Coatings were in the mingle at SEMA 2013 this year.

Line-X

Willie being Willie

Who did they have there besides the American newly famous Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty. This is a guy that is now an icon of a lifestyle that is closely tied to protective coatings. Like adopting a kid that is already on the honor roll, Line-X was engineering in their strategies with marketing at SEMA this year. Willie was personable and charismatic as country boys are known to be (sometimes).

Line-X is also announcing the launch of Truck Gear by line-X. This is a new series of parts and accessories that will propel Line-X into the automotive accessories market. This keeps bed liner married to new services like step bars, roll bars, fenders, bumpers, gates, etc…
The Duck Dynasty upgrade available for the 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 is the Commander Series – a new truck concept specifically designed for Willie Robertson, CEO of Duck Commander, and unveiled during the 2013 SEMA Show. This is a package with LINE-X exterior coating, custom graphics and accessories that really set it apart.

Rhino Linings Bed Liner

Rhino Linings definitely had less exposure compared to Line-X luring Duck Dynasty fanatics. But, they came out with a pretty awesome look with their mad max style Jeep Bed Liner photo shoot. These Jeeps embody what’s possible with a quality spray on bed liner. Spray-Lining provides this capability with the highest quality DIY spray on bed liner on the market.

Don?t take the easy way out

You have to do a topcoat if you are using color chips on your garage floor kit. Any company that sells garage floor kits without advising to use a clear top coat is taking the easy way out just to guarantee a sale. The truth is that without a clear coat over the broadcast medium, any floor will have problems maintaining a new look, cleanup and longevity.
Coating your garage floor with a quality poly hybrid coating is a solid addition to your property and adds a needed layer of protection to your high traffic areas. Concealing damage and stains on the original substrate are primary purposes of applying a garage floor coating.

Your Koi Pond – 5 Great Design Ideas

Koi Pond Design

What a great idea. A pond in the backyard with fauna and viewing areas built in. It’s a great way to turn your land into a rewarding peaceful place to get some personal time and think. Just like any task, it comes down to materials, land, future goals and ability to do maintenance on your property.

Great Design Ideas Require Great Work

At the end of the day you are either going to be able to handle some, all or none of the work for yourself. You make decisions of design based on a few things: your desires, your budget, your physical constraints. You must be willing to pay for things you really cannot do and NOT GET STUCK.

View our Koi Pond Kits and Product Information

Check out these great ideas for designing and building your koi pond (doesn’t have to be koi specifically, but it’s a good example)

Koi Pond Basic – Specifications

pond-schema
A koi pond must be properly designed in order to allow whatever species you have living in your pond to thrive. In this case Koi Fish are the topic. Here are some basic guidelines for creating the necessary environment.

  • 3+ feet deep
  • 25 sq. ft. of pond per koi
  • No less than 1,000 gallons of water

Koi fish need shade. If you’re pond is in the direct sunlight you need to grow some kind of water plants that provide reasonable shade throughout 15%-30% of the pond surface area. Regardless, you need some sort of plant life to provide food and a healthy ecosystem for your pond.

Good filtration is a necessity to handle organic waste produced by the system that cannot be consumed by the environment. Spray Koi Pond Coatings instead of rolls of liner are very beneficial because you can install a bottom drain easily in this scenario.

Aeration is necessary to provide appropriate oxygen levels to the pond for your koi and other animals in the system. If you live in a hot climate or have large fish, proper aeration is crucial and can be accomplished with jets, waterfalls, and shallow streams.

Water quality is the last component that cannot be overlooked in the design phase of your koi pond. Optimal ph and water temperature are the two main factors determining water quality. A temp between 39 F and 68 F is ideal along with a ph balance between 7.0 and 7.8

Koi Pond Design – Visualizing

This is where your yard becomes a canvas. Many people may decide to bring in a landscape architect to help perfect the physical presentation of the koi pond and the surrounding plants and ground. With a spray coating for a koi pond the ideas are limitless. You don’t need to line the pond with heavy rocks or debris to try and hold down a plastic liner or protect the edge of the liner. You are also able to design absolutely any shape you want unlike traditional ponds where you are limited to round, oblong, or kidney shaped. This is a big plus, especially in small areas where you may want small veins throughout the area or have bottom structure that makes for an odd shaped floor.
If you do not have the dimensional thinking and understanding of plants that co-exist well, than a consultant might be right for you.
If you do have the ability, you might want to take a look at some of these resources for layout ideas:
Backyard Design | Koi Pond Shapes

Do NOT USE SMALL ROCKS in your Pond

algae-rock
This is a big no no. The maintenance is a nightmare. If you decide to do this, you will have to clean out the pond rock every year and clean thoroughly. If you don’t, small pockets of hydrogen will form under and between the rocks. If one of this pockets bursts, you will have a koi grave instead of a koi pond.

Move your water!

If you want to keep proper oxygen levels and keep algae from forming in uncontrollable levels, get a waterfall or a river. Waterfalls are an awesome addition to a koi pond because they really add depth to the area you are working with. They make a little area look much bigger. They create plenty of oxygen for your environment. Lighting up a waterfall at night is ridiculous! You will probably enjoy that addition for decades to follow

Spray Coat Your Koi Pond

Spray polyurea and polyurea hybrids are becoming very available and with significant advantages over concrete and traditional pond liners.

  • Concrete is very expensive in regards to labor and time to complete.
  • Traditional liners are cheaper, but they come at a price. These systems typically only last a few years which ends up costing you double the time and effort to just do a spray koi pond kit. In fact the original installation is easier because you do not have to mess around with bulky liners and seams. Instead you simply spray the area to the proper build, let it cure and … well, that’s it. This is also a LOT easier than trying to use concrete. There is no way you are going to do concrete DIY unless you are a mason by trade.

What is MDI – Is it Safe?

What is MDI?

MDI is the acronym representing methyl diphenyl diisocyantate. There are three main versions of this compound:

  • 2,2′-MDI
  • 2,4′-MDI
  • 4,4′-MDI

The 4,4′ isomer is most widely used.

Who makes MDI

Bayer followed closely by Yantai Wanhua. Other major producers are BASF, BorsodChem, Dow, Huntsman and Nippon Polyurethane Industry. All major producers of MDI are members of the International Isocyanate Institute. Their main purpose is the promotion of the safe handling of MDI and TDI in the workplace, community and environment. This implies that there is an inherent risk or danger involved with the use of this chemical.

How Dangerous is MDI?

MDI is an allergen and sensitizer, meaning that once certain amount of exposure occurs, the person is more susceptible to reaction at much lower concentrations. Persons developing sensitivity to isocyanates may have dangerous systemic reactions to extremely small exposures, including respiratory failure. Handling MDI requires strict engineering controls and personal protective equipment. With this knowledge it must be understood, that even though the resulting chemical reaction of polyols and MDI is a safe rugged durable polyurethane or polyurea coating, the process of applying this material is where the danger lies.

Marketing information for spray bedliner materials and other coatings tends to bypass this important fact. Yes, it’s stated in the msds sheets, or in fine print. However, generally sales people leave out the very important fact that any exposure to mist from the process of spraying a bedliner can result in allergic and sensitized reaction to the components. This is DANGEROUS and should be taken very seriously.

MDI Exposure from Bedliners

We would like to hear from anyone who has had physical negative side effects resulting from the exposure to spray on bedliners or other coatings involving polyurea or polyurea hybrids.

Why Do We Care?

We are manufacturers of high quality polyurethanes and polyhybrids that do not use MDI for reactions. We continue to research polyureas and polyurethane vendors. In that research, we find some covering up the facts about MDI in their products, or at least the danger associated with them.

Safe Bedliner with the Same Strength as Rhino and Scorpion

If you want a truly safe bedliner or coatings product that competes with Rhino Lining or Scorpion Bedliners, take a look at SL1000(R,X) polyhybrid bedliner. This material is superior in safety and comparable in function to rhino and scorpion.

Autobody and Contractor Franchise Startups

Top Franchises for Contractors and Auto Body Shop Owners

I have selected a few franchises listed under ?Best Automotive Franchises? that range between 5,000 dollars and 50,000 dollars in startup cost.

Out of the gate, this is misleading because most of the included franchises have much greater total franchise investments.? The low figures are the out of pocket cash requirement which does not factor in-house and third party loans required to get busy.

We are not saying that opportunity does not exist, we are just identifying that it is a VERY SERIOUS proposition and anyone looking to go into it should tread carefully.

The Franchise Opportunity ? What do they offer?

  • Questionable Profits ? Many times the profit margins given to the prospect are before expenses, which is pretty useless and make it hard to understand actual net profit potential.
  • High Start Up Costs ? non-refundable initial franchise fees, required furniture, signs, equipment etc?? These items can be very expensive since there?s NO COMPETITION on these resources.
  • Encroachment ? Franchises like Line-X and other automotive franchises do not guarantee a locked radius.? So, when business is good, the opportunity to open another franchise in the area is irresistible to the franchisor.
  • Limited Independence ? With a franchise, remember you are buying the business plan as well as the marketing and materials.? So, if you want to improve on your business model there is often no room to make adjustments without breaking your franchisee agreement
  • Restrictions on post term competition ? When signing the franchise agreement, the business owner is many times signing away his/her rights to operate in competition with the franchisor for a number of years (5-7).? So, don?t think of going independent once you go down this road.

There is HOPE Keep Reading or go straight to the list of franchises

The difference between franchise agreements

The Noose Business

A Business Form or ?Package? franchise is like a McDonalds or Dunkin Donughts where you have extremely high start-up costs, a lot of competition and very strict rules to follow. You are not your own business man, you pretty much belong to the franchisor. These days, it?s becoming more difficult to get into a franchise for a large chain. Mult-unit operators are becoming more popular as they can leverage price and typically have a better track record for succeeding in business compared to a sole proprietor with little to no experience in running a successful business. Franchisors are able to be picky these days. They don?t just want your money; they want to guarantee their own success.

Enough Rope to Hang Yourself ? Product Franchise

You can still start a business and follow an existing successful model without all of the restrictions included in a franchisor-franchisee agreement.?? You can use a product franchise model where the agreement is to distribute or apply a company?s product (Like Mobil or GoodYear). ?This is a looser definition which mainly includes signage and product.? Your internal business is pretty much your own.? You still have franchise fees and some regulations to adhere to, but for the most part you run the business the way you see fit.

Build Your Business and Succeed

An even looser contract is one that simply provides you with material with no minimum to buy and targeted marketing to support local presence and brand awareness.? If you already have a successful business and are looking to add some alternate revenue stream you may want to look at this.

Spray-Lining offers a material?s based opportunity competing directly with Rhino Linings Line-X and Scorpion Coatings. ?There are no minimums or franchise agreements.? You are investing in superior applicator technical support, a broad set of material for coatings (bedliners, floors, agriculture, industrial) and local marketing of your existing business.

Why franchises fail

  • Location selection
  • False expectations
  • Poor business decisions
  • Poor understanding of what the franchisee is responsible for
  • Unclear understanding of ROI
  • Poor franchisor selection

Expecting a substantial return on investment without a time to mature and expected sweat equity will guarantee failure.

Sweat Equity

The general rule for business is that if you are you own a business you will work 70-80 hours compared to the employed counterpart.? The benefit is that overtime the return will greatly surpass those punching a clock and there is a chance at designing your own lifestyle.? However, there is always a great investment in time and effort to get over the startup hump.? This is why many will fail whether they are a franchise or not past the first 5 years.

Let’s Get to the Review

Following is a list of 5 startups that boast under $50,000 startup.? Most these prices are startup capital for the rights to have the name and marketing associated with the franchise and DO NOT include other investments required to get your business running.

From material costs to total loan amounts that are not included in the minimal cost figure displayed.? For example, AAMCO states that the startup fee is $39,400.? However, the franchise investment required is about $250,000 dollars.

Aamco

Cash Requirement: $39,500

Total Investment: $232,000 ? $299,000

As soon as you become an AAMCO franchisee, they offer:

  • Market development and site selection
  • Extensive new-franchisee orientation and training
  • Proven national advertising along with local marketing campaigns
  • Established business systems, operations support and recruiting assistance
  • Multi-unit growth and real estate acquisition opportunities

Reviews of AAMCO

Flooring and Coating Franchises

A few of the opportunities we listed here are flooring and coating franchises.? These are interesting for the automotive owner usually because the amount of specialized equipment is minimal.? A compressor and a few specialized components are required to get started and the process is familiar in regards to the autobody shops that do painting and truck bedliners.

In Summary

Franchises do work in the right environment.? However, if you are an existing body shop or contractor looking to set up your future by growing your existing business be careful and do your research.? From what I can tell, if you have less than 50k to invest in a business, a franchise is a risky deal.? Look into product based businesses and opportunities that offer to expand your existing name locally.? This is the key to getting a return in your first year. ?Inflated costs and extra fees and royalties associated with franchises may drown you.

Also, be ready to work your ass off for the first one to five years.? It?s a reality with any business, and if you already own one then you are already onboard.

So, get out there, do your research and make some money.

Benefits of Spray Cartridges

They are definitely clean compared to using plural equipment….But, there are a lot of downfalls to polyurea spray cartridges for Bedliner.

Top 5 Problems with Polyurea Cartridges

  1. Expensive material compared to pure polyurea prices.. The prices of the average cartridge system are significantly more than just buying the raw material.
  2. Unfriendly spray Apparatus – The spray guns have all the material loaded in the front where you have to balance the gun, making it easy to mess up.
  3. Discounts — NOT Available. We called for pricing and found that the best you can get is with 20 boxes a 20% discount.. There don’t seem to be any discounts after that.
  4. Colors – You can’t mix colors with these premixed systems which is ok if you are looking to only spray black. We get many requests for color options and there’s no way this would work for us. In some cases you can get about 8 standard colors, but that’s not enough for guys who love their truck and want true color matching.
  5. Cartridges?average?cost is between $45 – $65 each. This spray in bedliner solution ends up being one of the highest cost bedliner. It?requires about?3 cartridges to make one gallon. That’s more than $150 in disposable equipment per gallon!!

RhinoPro Cartridge Bed Liner Review

Solutions to Cartridge Spray Guns

Typically the Cartridge is seen as a solution to traditional plural spray systems for polyurea and polyurethane hybrid coatings. However, in this post we are going the other way. Why? To keep the reader informed on all technologies. In the polyurea and polyurethane hybrid coating markets, there are a lot of options when it comes to materials and equipment for bedliners, floors and other projects.

Spray-Lining Product Detail

Polyurea

Superior performance to hybrids and polyurethane in general. The main reaction is isocyantates and an amine which yields a super strong industrial strength material. However, the application of these materials is highly regulated in it’s pure form and in many cases across the US, is not allowed.
Poly Basics

Polyurea Hybrid

Poylurea hybrids have less polyurea (isos) but still exhibit superior tensile strength and impact resistance making them very suitable replacements for pure polyureas.

Polyurethane Bedliner

Pure polyurethane bedliners are not popularized that much these days. You usually hear about pure polyurea (which is typically not true) and polyurea hybrids (70-30 polyurea/polyurethane blends). The large franchises are marketing their products as superior to everyone else’s. The reality is that out of the top 3-5 brands, they all have positive aspects that make them better than the other in some way or the other.

Armadillo Versus Line-X

Armadillo Liners – Comparison buying guide

Armadillo-vs-Line-X offers a variety of bedliner materials for your body shop. They have pure polyurea, polyurea hybrids and polyurethane systems for truck bedliners. It seems they have 5 main products that are available in 5 gallon and drum set quantities. These range from 100% pure polyurea to 60 (polyurea) / 40 (polyurethane) ratios.

Armadillo Pricing : The prices are not posted and you cannot get any kind of general idea on the pricing.

Do it yourself : NO

Colors: 7 colors (pewter[grey], dark grey, light grey, blue, green, red, )

Notes: Spray-Lining and Coatings offers polyurea, polyurea hybrid, poly-hybrid and polyurethane. We have color options for any number of colors, standard or custom colored bedliner. Compare us to Armadillo liners and see the difference. We are a generic alternative to Rhino Linings, Scorpion Coatings and Armadillo Liners.

Compare Armadillo to Line-X

Line-X offers primarily a high pressure pure 100% polyurea solution for bedliners and industrial coatings. They have a great product. Their business model is different than Armadillo in the sense that they have strong franchise agreements whereas Armadillo is a pure distributor of high grade bedliner in volume. Line-X has opportunities for someone looking for a turnkey solution for pure polyurea.

Line-X Pricing : Not available, but we know that there are very strict franchise agreements and expensive equipment costs to get started. You will spend upwards of $50,000 to get spraying with Line-X

Do it yourself : Not available

Colors : No colors as far as we can tell, though we have seen a few images with colors

Notes: Line-X is definitely a top quality product. However, the franchise agreement appears to be very strict from what we have heard. There are many satisfied dealers that turn a good profit. As with any business opportunity failure is common. Spray-Lining is a superior solution for the body shop or contractor who is looking for a low cost startup with immediate profit potential.

Any feedback about your experience with Armadillo or Line-x is welcome.

Learn Why Spray-Lining is Better

Competing DIY Spray Guns: Low Quality

DIY Products come with Low Quality Spray Guns

Rollers identify low quality product from the start- they equate to a 1 part (1 part vs 2 parts or plural component) there is no texture control so those products have little beads or ?pebbles? to create some slip-proofing? Faulty coatings yield low end results. The main indicator is that the ?orange peel? or texture wears out quickly. This is why:

  • They?re made of a different solid material than the coating which dries ?around? each grain but with no actual ?bond? to the grains,
  • These grains are made of either crumb rubber (old tires) or ground acrylic paint which bears no stress, they fall out,
  • They?re not made of polyurea or polyhybrid which have very high tensile strengths over 2,000 psi
  • The shutz , pronounced ?shoots gun? is the cheapest undercoating gun on earth. Many don?t come with containers to hold the coating!

close-upShutzshutz-asembledshutz-with-can

Shutz guns were made for 1-part under coating which is a cheap tar-like formula to spray under vehicle frames & bodies & not to apply a bedliner which is inherently less viscous (thinner) than tar? since undercoating guns were never designed for true spray on bedliner, and mostly because true spray-lining formulas require good equipment to apply, every DIY spray on bedliner sold except SLC equate to imitations and poor spray guns.

Al?s Liner Professional Gun

? Al?s Liner comes with no gun, BUT you can buy theirs for fifty-five dollars. The real problem with that is that it?s a cheap gun available at harbor freight for $14. Als liner DIY bedliner kit comes with 1 gallon + 4 ounces primer + 4 ounces color = 134 ounces = barely over a gallon of spray bedliner. This is NOT enough to line a truck bed properly. PERIOD. Al?s Liner States ?A professional grade bed liner spray gun that delivers a perfect finish to your and can be used over and over again. It?s an all-purpose air texture. SLC uses Graco, Binks, DeVilBiss equipment. You might verify at the AlsLiner site or inspect truths at http://www.spray-lining.com/diy/compare-diy-bedliners.php .

Killing Yourself Slowly

The polyurea and polyurethane coating industries have become increasingly important as the functional applications have increased. The following uses have been identified and highly employ protective coatings:

– Theme parks
– Playground
– Boats
– truck bed liners
– agricultural equipment
– military
– bridges
– industrial

Side Effects of a Superior Product

Lung infections, sore eyes and skin rashes, neurological damage, kidney and liver damage along with others are all symptoms of exposure to polyurea and/or polyurethane either by vapor or direct contact. Dangerous chemicals are applied frequently in many industries and environments. The key is that after they cure or are applied, there is a reasonable threshold they attain that makes them safe. Like after painting, you notice the ?paint smell? subsides after 3-4 days and all is good. Well, it?s not really like that, but that is a simple comparison.

What is Safe?

Safe simply means that there are no immediate or long term side effects to touching or being near a material for some period of time at some concentration in some environment. One of the most obvious examples of NOT safe is the bi-product of Nuclear Power Plants. These materials are so hazardous that they are stored underground in water tight containers FOREVER. Yet, we still produce them on a daily basis in the name of ?clean energy?. So, some group of lawmakers determined that the risk is worth the reward.

Is this worth the RISK

Radioactive Waste in Washington causes ground water hazard potential. The Governor Inslee stated that there was no current health risk because it would take some time for the leaks to breach ground water or the Columbia River. WHAT??!!

Why are household chemicals considered safe?

They contain cancer causing or otherwise dangerous (to the respiratory, skin or other organs) chemicals that evaporate into the air you breathe or are absorbed through the skin when in direct contact. Still, people use Xylene, Lacquer Thinner, gasoline, bleach, Chlorine and other dangerous chemicals daily in an effort to clean, prepare, construct and operate their lives.
You see the warnings on the labels and hopefully you follow the safety precautions as directed. Unfortunately, sometimes people hold an idea of ?if I cannot see it, it cannot hurt me?. This is a deadly mentality to carry when working with chemicals in general.
Bleach for instance has horrible side effects if used without gloves and face mask or used in a closed environment. Yet, we use it every day on our countertops, toilets and walls. The long term side effects are not discussed much because the industry would rather assume that consumers are following all safety practices.

Handling is Key

Millions of articles, books, directions, guides address the issue of safely handling materials. MSDS sheets exist to provide necessary handling procedures and exposure prevention information. OSHA exists to provide safety regulations to the US workforce. Small business owners really need to place importance on materials handling, application and preventative measures for exposure. They are typically less regulated and may have better odds for cutting corners because there is less accountability.
Applying Polyurea or Polyurethane like a dumbass
Simply put, if you are spraying a polyurea or polyurethane material and not wearing proper respirator and protective clothing you are walking a tight rope. Similarly, if you are spraying it outside with no booth than you are exposing others to a very dangerous situation. If you are spraying it inside with no protection you are asking for it.

?Polyurethanes are made from isocyanates, the chemicals associated with the world’s worst chemical accident in India in 1984 (the Bhopal disaster, which involved the accidental release into the atmosphere of methyl isocyanate from a Union Carbide factory). They cause lung irritation or lung damage and are sensitising chemicals, meaning that after sufficient exposure, one can become highly sensitive in an allergic way, reacting to even very small doses of the chemicals (5, 10). They may be released as monomers from both water-based and organic solvent-based polyurethane varnishes. The combination of volatile aromatics and the release of isocyanates make polyurethanes one of the most hazardous interior-use products on the market. ?

Safe Polys that are Comparable to Dangerous Ones

There are safe poly hybrids that have the same physical characteristics of polyureas and polyurethanes but don?t have the same negative side-effects seen with the Rhino Lining, Line-X, Ultimate Linings, Qwikliner and other coatings companies.

Blowing Your Mind

In an interview with a polyurethane applicator we were told that the representative of one of the above companies specifically stated that they were told, ?There is no problem spraying our polyurea. It is completely safe and environmentally friendly?.
Why on earth would a bed liner company risk the life of others to simply make a deal? Maybe a deal with the Devil!
Do your research if you are a body shop owner or repair business who also applies spray coatings like Rhino Lining, Line-X, Scorpion or Spray-Lining bedliner.
